Team Gauss

We are going in the wrong direction.
Everytime we consolidate two school systems into one, or shut down an elementary school - we lose.
Now we will have fewer people working. Why is that good?
If government would get itself out of our lives, our schools would cost less.

Less federal government please.
Less state government too.

I bought a used car about a year ago. It has been sitting in my yard doing nothing.
Now that I am going to put it on the road, I am told that the State of Massachusetts will charge me
an extra fee since I did not officially title it in my name within 60 days.
Yikes.

Who invented that rule? Must have been some HS teachers in Cambridge.

This picture says it all!

Take a look at Albert Puljois's back foot.

There is no weight on his back side.

The toe of his back foot is not supporting his weight.

He is hitting the ball out in front! In front of homeplate!

His right elbow is shaped like an L.

By the time  contact is made, the bat is moving upward.

He is not chopping down at the ball.

He is crushing.

Teach your little leaguers to hit like Albert! and all of the other MLB players.

If you do, you will see the runs pile up.

But, in case you need to see a bit more ....

David Eckstein
Alphonso Soriano
Derek Jeter
Alex Rodriquez
In each of the four photos, look at the back foot. No weight left on the back foot. These professionals are coming out to get the baseball. There is no squishing of any bug. In fact, it appears that in three of the photos the back foot is off the ground.
In each of the four photos, look at a tilted bat. Do not use the phrase, "level swing". The bat is not level. It is tilted.
In each of the four photos, look at the 90 degree bend in the right elbow.
In each of the four photos, the swing feeds into a stiff front leg.  The hips are fully rotated. The fact that the hitter allows his back foot roll up onto his toe allows the hips to rotate freely and naturally.

The following text was written by Chris O'leary.
He has created a masterful website on hitting.
Take the time to read each of the four paragraphs below.
Read them twice.
Then put Chris O'leary's website in your benchmark list: http://www.chrisoleary.com

Ruined!

As a result of my experience working with college, minor, and major league baseball players, I have come to believe that many, if not most, college programs and major league organizations are unintentionally, but systematically, ruining their best young hitters. Teams are recruiting, signing, and drafting hitters because they can hit the ball well. Then, as soon as they get those hitters in their system, they change their swings and hitting mechanics and then act surprised when those hitters stop being able to hit well. While it may surprise people that this could be going on, I know for a fact that this is happening. This scenario describes the experiences of most of my clients at the college, minor, and major league levels. There are a number of reasons why hitters are being ruined by their teams and coaches.

LOW PRIORITY POSITION
I have had many people tell me that part of the problem is how some minor league hitting instructors are selected in major league organizations. Many minor league hitting instructors tend to be former speed guys. Because of their speed, more often then not they were taught to swing down on the ball, just put it in play, and try to beat out the throw. As is common in life, these instructors now teach what they themselves were taught, so the cycle perpetuates itself. Of course, you have to question how good the hitting instruction they received really was if they are coaching rather than playing. As an aside, you see the same cycle perpetuating itself in the world of youth hitting instruction. I have never understood why some parents are so eager to take the hitting advice of a former minor leaguer who washed out due to his inability to hit and who now teaches the same stuff that likely ruined his swing.

INCORRECT USE OF VIDEO
Some organizations don't use video at all, and most of the rest do not use video correctly. In my experience, most evaluation of hitters is done with the naked eye, which simply isn't up to the task. What really matters in the swing is the moment between the planting of the front heel and the Point Of Contact. The problem is that that happens too fast for the human eye to get more than a basic sense of what's going on. When video is used, it is often used to review a hitter's approach and not their mechanics. While that is a valid use of video, the problem is that too often that video is used during the game itself, which can lead to thinking and analysis paralysis.

THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM IS WRONG
My contention that hitting instructors aren't using video at all, or correctly, is born out by the persistence of the conventional wisdom about hitting. If hitting instructors spent even a few minutes, much less hours, looking at video of the best hitters in the world, there is no way that they could continue to believe the things they do. Most major league hitting instructors seem to teach the same basic stuff, most of which doesn't match up with reality. It's as if everyone has read the same, terrible book about hitting.

********

This is what Chris O'Leary says about Squishing the bug.

Some people believe that it is important that hitters be on the ball of their feet at the Point Of Contact. This is variously known and taught as "squishing the bug", "squish the bug", "squashing the bug", and "squash the bug". Proponents of this idea includes some people who instruct at the major league level. Unfortunately, this isn't what the best hitters do. As the photos below and further down on this page demonstrate, at the Point Of Contact the best hitters are either on the point of their back toes at the Point Of Contact or their back toes are completely off the ground. (Check for some photos either at his website or scroll down on this website.)

In the book Flatland, a square from flatland visits a line inside line-land.
He meets the king, who is a line segment, sliding back and forth along his single-line universe.
No matter what he said, the square could not convince the king to look east or west.
The king had no concept of east-west; the king could only think in terms of north-south.
This frustrated the square very much. The king was frustrated too.

The king just could not see it.
Keep an open mind!

Take a look at these major leaguers! Their swing is perfect. That is how they became major leaguers.

http://www.efastball.com/hitting/should-i-hit-the-top-of-the-ball-or-the-bottom/

The Path of a Batter's Bat

A 6 foot pitcher stands on an elevated mound.
He releases the ball at least at shoulder height.
The ball is coming into home plate on a downward angle.

To maximize his chances of flush, solid contact, a batter should get his bat into the reverse upward angle that matches that of the pitched ball.
Doing so will extend the time he has to crush the ball. The bat is in the path of the incoming ball for a much longer period of time.

A downward swing at the ball greatly reduces the time to hit the ball flush.
A great athlete, with superior hand-eye coordination, can make the downward chop method work against  fair to  mediocre pitching.
The downward chop of the bat is the absolute wrong angle.
The bat and ball are only in the same path for a very small fraction of the time.
The ball is coming down and if the bat is also coming down, then they can only intersect at one point in time and space.
Got it? Can you see that?

Do not tell your little leaguers to chop down at the ball. Ever.
They will miss the ball more often than not.
So would Dustin Pedroia.

Most teams are not filled with great athletes.
The average kids need the extra time to regularly make hard contact.

The great news is ... you do not need to be a superior athlete to hit a pitched baseball.
You need to use the proper swing to give yourself more time during the swing.

Look at Eckstein's, Soriano's, Jeter's, and Rodriquez's swings above closely.
They are not chopping down at the ball. The path of their bat is the same path that the ball is in on.
They give themselves a much better chance of a hard contact.

Chopping down will make a difficult thing to do even harder. It gives you less time. You need more time, not less.

Ok, just one more. Albert Puljols has a stiff front leg.
His swing fluidly feeds his weight into that front leg.
His weight has left his back side.
His back heel does not squish any bugs.
The bat is square to the ball , but it is not level to the ground.
His hips are rotated perfectly.

This was a home run.
This photo and the other three photos came from a website by Chris O'Leary.
Mr. O'Leary has got it right.
This is the swing taught by Coach Caswell.
It is not a linear swing.  It is a rotational swing.
There is no lunging.
Puljois is hitting off the front hinge. Not the back hinge.

The ball is about to leave the ballpark.

Your youngster should learn this swing at an early age.

It is quite possible for a relatively small Pepperell, MA boy to hit one over the fence at Bartleson field.
That is the definition of joy.  I've seen it many times.

In fact, my last little league team homered 13 times.

Eight different players. Go Braves. These Braves were 19-1. They crushed the ball.
It was the last team to defeat Townsend's Tom Lamoureaux for a local LL championship.

No matter how big or small you are, you can crush.
It's not about your size.
It is about your technique.

 Know These Things

When Tiger Woods hits a golf ball, he hinges off of the front-side. He is never hinging off of his back side.

When Bobby Hull blasted a slap-shot, he hinged off of the front-side.

When Ilie Nastase, Rod Laver, and Evonne Goolagong hit their tennis serves, not once, not ever -- did they hinge off of their backside.

100% percent of the time they hinged off of their front-side.

When Doug Flutie threw that famous hail-mary pass over 60 yards, he hinged off of his front-side.

When Nolan Ryan threw his fast ball, when all major league pitchers throw the ball, they hinge off of their front-side.

When major league hitters hit, they hinge off of their front-side.

They never. Ever, never, ever ... hinge off of their back-side. That is absolute hockey-puck.

High speed photography now enables us to see what the professional hitter actually does. Look closely.

Have a good day.

Don't ask me who Ilie Nastase is. He was #1 in the world. He was a front-side hinger.

In Fenwark Park, is there more square feet in the outfield or the infield? There are 3 outfielders. There are 5 infielders.

How to Hit a Pitched Baseball

Here are the four steps to hitting a pitched baseball.
They all occur naturally. No unnatural movements.

Load to Coil Momemtum
Step to Set the Front Hinge
Swing
Finish
A slight backward rocking of the hands initiates an overall gentle coiling backward that shifts weight onto your back leg. The batter should rock/coil backward into the load position.  The batter is not leaning backwards.  The batter is not tilted backwards.  A tilted batter will lose flexibility. A tilted batter has a tendency to lock up on the back side without realizing it.   We want the load to be a fluid movement backward so that a fluid and flexible movement forward can begin almost immediately thereafter. It is a short graceful fluid motion. It has a sense of rhythm.

This loading action can be achieved either with a backward toe tap, a flexible ankle sway backward, or a flamingo like knee bend of your front leg.

The batter’s initial stance should not be the load position. The batter should coil into the load position as the pitcher starts to load. The batter should not pre-load, but rather coil load while the pitcher is starting to load himself.

Taking advantage of the momentum stored up with a proper load, the batter will allow a percentage of his body weight to flow forward as he takes a small step forward with his front leg. He is doing this primarily to set the front hinge on his front leg.  His entire front foot hits the ground not just his toe. His front leg stiffens up as it receives some of the shifted body weight.  The hands are still back as the batter has not decided whether or not to swing at the ball. The LOAD and STEP phases occur on every pitch. They occur even if you do not swing.

Although this is a weight shift strategy – the bulk of the weight shift does not occur at this moment in time. During this STEP phase, you are setting the front hinge with some weight. Enough weight for it to stiffen. You are initiating the weight shift process – but you are not completing it.

We try to hit the ball before it reaches homeplate. The swing is an axe-like, powerful motion to the point of contact. As the swing progresses the backside is feeding a fluid weight shift into the front side. As the hitter gets deeper into the swing, more weight is fed and shifted. As more weight comes forward during the swing, the back hip rotates while the front leg/hip stiffens and it is used as a front hinge. The weight of the back foot is released to the point where the back heel has rotated and has lifted off of the ground. The back foot rolls up onto the toes. There is no bug squishing. This rotation is not something the player thinks about. It happens naturally as the swing pulls more weight from the back-side to the front-side. The back toe typically remains in contact with the ground, although this is not necessary.  Ballplayers with perfect balance may have their toe come completely off of the ground. A slow motion video of Roberto Clemente shows his back leg raised up off of the ground. If the toe remains in contact with the ground it is likely to drag forward a bit. This is true for a full offensive swing.

Sometimes on a defensive swing or a swing on an outside pitch, less body weight is shifted and the toe may not move forward. The batter needs to adjust.

The angle of the bat is NOT horizontal to the ground. You may hear coaches yell “level swing”.  If they mean level to the ground, they are wrong. A level swing will greatly limit the amount of balls that can be hit. The swing is not level. A level swing promotes the rolling of wrists. Rolling your wrists is definitely the wrong thing to do.

The bat is angled downward. The hands are above the barrel. During the swing the hands are also in front of the bat head. Almost immediately after you begin the swing, the knob of the bat goes from facing down to facing UP and it remains facing up throughout the swing. The back-side of the hand nearest to the knob (left hand for right handed hitters) will remain up.

You seek to mash the ball. If done correctly, the very end of the barrel will be below the ball. This is what it means to  “hit below the ball”.  You are trying to generate LIFT. The barrel of the bat makes an arc that starts low and finishes high.

Upon contact, the hips have rotated fully. They are square. The front arm is extended outward. Your weight has left your back-side.

After contact, the bat continues to move gracefully. The bat continues on its angular upward path and it finishes high. You can imagine that the bat head has traveled in a path of a giant tilted circle.

During batting practice, a batter should re-trace in reverse the path the bat took during the previous swing. He should retrace the tilted circle. No short cuts back to the stance position.

The Essence of a Hitter's Swing

Want to Crush a Baseball? Learn the Swing.

  • The batter should load with a slight coiling backwards.
  • The batter should come forward to set a stiff front leg.
  • The back foot should release by rolling it forward/up on the toes.
  • The batter should feed  his weight into the stiff front leg as he swings.
  • No weight remains on the backside.
  • No squishing of the bug.
  • Do not pre-load or pre-lean.
  • The bat is not level with the ground.
  • The bat is tilted and it pursues a circular arc.
  • The finish is high.
The goal is to crush a baseball.
Baseball is not much fun if you are not crushing.

Get to the front-side and crush.
This is not a lunge. This is rotational.
Coach Caswell has created a terrific hitting DVD.
He explains the proper approach to hitting.
He demonstrates drills that encourage the proper hitting technique.

His college team finished 55-0 in his last two years.
An Olympic Gold Medal.
Eleven NBA titles in thirteen years.
He won with different players alongside him.
How fitting it is that the NBA has finally recognized his achievement.
Whenever I have driven through the Ted Williams Tunnel,
I cannot help thinking that it should be named The Bill Russell Tunnel.
Williams' record in our armed services is the only difference maker.
On field accomplishments?
It is Russell.
In the recent words of NBA great Bill Walton,
the only stat that matters is the scoreboard.
Russell dominates that statistic.
Do not give me Michael Jordan.
Do not give me Kobe Bryant. Please.

THE ARMSTRONG PULL UP PROGRAM

Developed by Major Charles Lewis Armstrong, USMC, this program consists of two workouts per day, five days a week.  Most people who stick with this program are able to do 20 pullups within 4 to 6 weeks.

Every morning, do three maximum effort sets of push-ups.  Major Armstrong said that he would get out of bed and hit the floor to do his first max set.  He would then go and shave, and return to do his next set.  A few minutes later, he would do his third maximum effort set.  The push up is one of the best exercises to develop arm strength for pull-ups.  The rest of the routine goes like this:

Monday            Do five max effort sets of pull-ups, resting one minute between each set

Tuesday            Do a pyramid of repetitions, starting with one pull-up then 10 seconds of rest, 2 pull-ups and 20 seconds of rest, 3 pull-ups and 30 seconds of rest, and so on until you are unable to do more repetitions than your previous set.

Wednesday        Do three “training sets” of overhand pull-ups three sets of underhand pull-ups, and three sets of overhand pull-ups where the back of your neck touches the bar.  A training set is dictated by your current level of strength.  If you are advanced, it might be 5 or 6.  Rest one minute between sets.  The goal of the workout is to do the same number of repetitions per set, so start off conservatively, if you can only do 1, use one.

Thursday            Do training sets, resting one minute between each set, until you are unable to complete a set.  Use the same number of repetitions that you used in your Wednesday sets.  This will probably turn out to be your longest (and hardest) day.

Friday                Repeat the day that you had the most trouble with during the week.

Take the weekends off.  Your muscles will need this time to recover.  Females can adapt the flexed arm hang to this program by simply replacing repetitions with hang times.  The key to this program is regularity and COMMITMENT.  If you follow the program consistently, you should see improvement within a few weeks.

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before,
but had once failed an entire class.
--------------------------------------------

That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK,
we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.
The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D!
No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering,
blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

Champions

25 wins  - 0 losses

This team outscored their opponents by 198 runs in 25 games. There was a mercy rule in effect. They crushed the ball on a regular basis. Hitter 1 through hitter 9. All season long. Nine times we went yard: Matt Canning (3), Matt Foley(2), Doug Baird(3), Matt Heisler(1). All batters were a threat to pound the ball. It did not matter if the pitcher was throwing heat or not.  Time him up.

These champions are:

Kevin Quin, Zach Caraviello, Matt Canning, Josh Mihill, Matt Foley, Justin Roberts, Matt Heisler, Mark Canning, Nick Ravanis, Abe Mughal, Brandon Cole, Chris Canning, Michael Chase, Cameron Gouldrup, Doug Baird
